Every cut (un)makes me who I am

 GABY_PERFORMANCE-27

This live, improvised performance uses the violent act of cutting away clothing as a metaphor of the deconstruction of identity. Each cut represents an aspect of the artist that they are attached to which is accompanied by a word spoken aloud that is’ felt ‘by the artist and then discarded e.g. artist, freedom, shame, soy decaf latte half a sugar etc.

The shedding is a catharsis in search of something more authentic behind the mask Gabrielle has constructed for herself. Clothing represents the external identity and attachments to things and ideas (words assigned to the pieces of clothing cut away) that make up the constructed self. It invites the audience to look at their own attachments and identification to them.

A transformation process occurs through the performance.
